Comments: My Father was Max H. Mayer. He was a bombardier in the 17s and flew out of Port Moresby in the early part of '43 with the 43rd,65th sq. The book,"Gore and Glory",by Crawford tells of some of his 48 missions. Those guys went through some real hell at 30,000 feet!

Comments: I just finished Old 666. Great story of a bunch of true American flying heroes and the dedicated ground crews who kept them flying despite poor food, air raids, and disease. As an amateur military historian I am convinced that the war against the Japanese Empire was won in the South Pacific by bleeding their navy, army and aviators of the cream of their top warriors. Two great books by Eric Bergerud, Touched With Fire and Fire In The Sky plus other books like 666 seem to point me in that direction. Clash Of Carriers points out quite clearly the after the South Pacific their aviators did not have the experience or flight time to stay competitive with the US aviation assets and pilots.
