My grandfather was Chris Parr. He was an Officer from what I understand. He never talked about the war much (as most men in the thick of things don’t). I do know that one of his jobs was to write home after a casualty and how do you write about how gloriously someone died when they had to literally hose them out of a bomber?! He also had to go through their footlocker and personal belongings and removed anything that might suggest infidelities in their lives (to wives or the wholesome image to their parents).
Supposedly, in the jungles where they were based your shoes/boots would be covered in a mossy mold after one night on the bare ground. So, finally, he went with a group of men with the premise that if he showed his officers rank he could keep the mp’s attention long enough so that the other men could “secure” enough lumber so that the rest of the men could step on a hard floor when they woke up instead of a wet, nasty, often flooded earthen floor of their tents.
