I was glad to find your site! I am beginning to research my family history, and know almost nothing about my grandfather's WWII experience. He is deceased (1988), and I have three of his military insignia. I was reading all sites from a search engine looking for something to let me know what the insignia meant, and I recognized it on your opening page. My grandfather was Walter Geroge Zimmer from Avoca, NY. He would have been in his early twenties during the war years. I do not know how long he served, or where. He would not talk about it. I would appreciate any clues!

Nice website on the 43rd Bomb Group! As a writer, I am very grateful for pages like this one. While writing about the Pacific airwar in my WWII novel, The Triumph and the Glory, I relied often upon the wealth of firsthand information available on the various veteran's websites. They were a great source! I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the preservation of our military history by visiting websites such as the 43rd's and so generously offering their thoughts, comments, and words of remembrance.

I was born in 1946 and we lived in Batesville for few years in 50's. The local park/baseball field was named in honor of Kenneth McCullar. My father back then told me about Kenneth being a hero, involved in skip bombing and getting killed. This information that I just came upon means a lot to me. My father to me also was a hero as he fought in WWII in Germany DDay+3 until the end of the war. Thank You.

My father, T.sgt John F.McDowell passed on 12/10/94. here in Alaska, which he loved and cherished the last 14 years of his life. His proudest moments were spent with his crew flying night missions from owi and nadzap. He recalled and gave me a press release to radio station WSAV in Savannah. They were jumped by 7 jap interceptors..shot down 2, a 3rd probable. The planes engines and systems were badly shot up..and several were wounded badly...they crash landed on the newly taken runway at Lingayen.. Dad is resting now with his fellows..on Ft.Richardson Army cemetary, here in Anchorage. He wore a jacket with the 63rd squadrons "Sea Hawk" (B-24`s) I have a picture of his crew and plane, probably on owi or biak...I don`t know the name of the plane in the picture. I'm only 27, but I grew up learning about aviation and history. The B-24 especially intrigued me because it was obviously a workhorse, but the -17 seemed to get all the glory. I've been trying to gather information so I could write an historically accurate screenplay about a -24 squad in WW2. It's a longshot, but the idea has been tossed around by a few of my friends who do production design in Hollywood. Especially with the new capabilites of digital special effects, a whole flight of Libs could fly on celluloid skies. Several years ago I was walking around the CAF's "Diamond Lil" and their -29 "Fifi" at a stopover in Jackson Mississippi. A former -17 pilot pointed to the -24 and said to me "I saw so many young men die at the controls of the B-24. You couldn't pay me to take a flight on one of those." I'd never heard such a thing, so I started tring to read up more on the Liberator. Maybe the guy did see a lot of -24's crack up, but I'm guessing it was just a case of Fort loyalty. I was lucky enough last April to drive past Lakefront Airport here in New Orleans when the Collings Foundation's "All-American/Dragon & His Tail" and the -17 "909" were in town. I'd seen that -17 already, but it was my first chance to check out the last "real" airworthy Liberator. I immediately took the opportunity to take a flight in the -24. I chose it over the -17, especially knowing that so few are left (they said they planned to retire it after 2000). I have to say it was the ride of my life, and I doubt I'll have another experience quite so exhilerating. It was beautiful. I called my Dad before I flew, to let him know what I was doing. He was about as excited as me. My girlfriend waited nervously on the ground, wondering "if it's such a safe plane, why are there only a couple of them left??" We flew for about 45 minutes. I could have stayed up there all day. I'm not the kind of person who believes in reincarnation, but I swear, the first time I stepped into that B-24, something just clicked. I seemed to know where everything was and what everything did. It all ust felt familiar. A bit spooky. I really didn't want to part with that airplane when the flight was done. I walked around it and just stared at it until my girl finally dragged me away. What a day! I love the site. Keep up the great work.
