The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s over Germany
by Stephen E. Ambrose
Price: $15.60
Hardcover - 299 pages (August 14, 2001)
Simon & Schuster; ISBN: 0743203399 ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.03 x 9.59 x 6.47
Stephen Ambrose is the acknowledged dean of the historians of World War II in Europe. In three highly acclaimed, bestselling volumes, he has told the story of the bravery, steadfastness, and ingenuity of the ordinary young men, the citizen soldiers, who fought the enemy to a standstill -- the band of brothers who endured together.

The very young men who flew the B-24s over Germany in World War II against terrible odds were yet another exceptional band of brothers, and, in The Wild Blue, Ambrose recounts their extraordinary brand of heroism, skill, daring, and comradeship with the same vivid detail and affection.

Ambrose describes how the Army Air Forces recruited, trained, and then chose those few who would undertake the most demanding and dangerous jobs in the war. These are the boys -- turned pilots, bombardiers, navigators, and gunners of the B-24s -- who suffered over 50 percent casualties.

With his remarkable gift for bringing alive the action and tension of combat, Ambrose carries us along in the crowded, uncomfortable, and dangerous B-24s as their crews fought to the death through thick black smoke and deadly flak to reach their targets and destroy the German war machine. Twenty-two-year-old George McGovern, who was to become a United States senator and a presidential candidate, flew thirty-five combat missions (all the Army would allow) and won the Distinguished Flying Cross. We meet him and his mates, his co-pilot killed in action, and crews of other planes. Many went down in flames.

The Forbidden Diary : A B-24 Navigator Remembers
by John Lawrence Stewart

Hardcover - 256 pages (June 1998)
McGraw-Hill; ISBN: 0071581871
Dimensions (in inches): 0.87 x 9.29 x 6.23
AS a WWII combat navigator, John Stewart was the "tour guide" for a B-24 Liberator, launching from England to strike tactical and strategic targets in Occupied Europe and Germany. While surviving 31 missions flown with the 467th Bomber Group, Stewart broke two rules: he kept an accurate private diary documenting the specifics of those missions; and he retained several of the maps and charts issued only to navigators just prior to takeoff. With their assistance, he offers an engrossing, pointedly candid description of grueling aerial combat and of one man's uncensored observations as he shepherded his crewmates through nerve-crushing enemy flak to their targets-then safely home. Stewart vividly depicts the hazards he routinely confronted each time the live action departed from the manual's page. . .which was nearly every mission. Witness what occurs when precision guidance instruments fail and a navigator's aptly named "dead reckoning" is called upon to salvage a flight. And feel what it's like to learn your 37-mile-long bomb run requires you to plot a course directly into the teeth of a 130-knot headwind. . .leaving you to linger over enemy flak guns at a leisurely relative ground speed of just 80 knots! The navigator's voice is one seldom heard in memoirs regarding the World War II missions of the celebrated 8th Air Force. Stewart's unvarnished recollections fill an enormous void with his painstakingly faithful reconstruction of that experience, and of that era.

Review from Amazon.Com's website: I was pleasantly surprised when I read B-24 Album for the first time. I own most of the books listed in the authors' bibliography, and yet I found B-24 Album new and refreshing. Unlike other books that attempt to cover the entire career of the B-24, this one sticks to the subject, and does it well. The text is readable, and there's good information for modelers like myself. One thing I was surprised to learn, and I've seen it nowhere else, is that the bomb bay doors were painted a deep yellow-orange at the bottom to alert others that the bomb bay was open. I plan to include this feature in my next model. The photographs are, for the most part, good quality, and a great deal of detail can be seen. Most of the photographs I have not seen before. Also, the photos are keyed to particular aircraft by AAF serial number and nickname, if known, together with notations as to whether the ship survived the war, or if not, where it went down, or if it was involved in a non-combat accident. The colored profiles at the back of the book are of good quality. I recommend it.

Anyone interseted in the history and use of the Consolidated B-24 Liberator during WWII will find this book a great reference guide. It is well written. Organized in chornological sequence documenting the B-24 from pre-war design and manufacturing through the life span of the plane, this book includes descriptions of modifcations and design enhancements implemented during the war. The B-24's use as a strategic and combat weapon is vividly described. The photos are outstanding. This large, 60 page paperback will appeal to readers of all ages.
